Speciality And Performance Chemicals

Speciality and Performance Chemicals can be broadly categorised into Coating, Adhesive, Sealant and Elastomer [CASE] Coatings are basically applied to improve surface properties of the substrate, such as appearance, adhesion, wetability, corossion resistance, wear resistance, and scratch resistance. Any material capable of fastening two other materials together by means of surface attachment is known as adhesive. Sealants are used to prevent the penetration of air, gas, noise, dust, fire, smoke or liquid from one location through a barrier into another. An elastomer is a polymer with the property of viscoelasticity. The term, which is derived from elastic polymer, is often used interchangeably with the term rubber.

Classification:
Coatings Adhesives Sealants Elastomers
Flame retardants Non reactive adhesives Acrylic sealant Unsaturated rubber
Surface active agents Reactive adhesives Epoxy sealant Saturated rubber
Pigments Natural adhesives Urethane sealant Thermoplastic elastomers
Flow modifier Synthetic adhesives Construction sealant Polysulfide rubber

The coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers (CASE) applications continued to experience strong growth worldwide. US demand for coatings, adhesives and sealants used in the automotive industry is forecasted to reach $5.6 billion in 2014 with the growth rate of 9.4% yearly.Coatings will remain the dominant segment, with water-based, powder and radiation-curable types leading gains.

In terms of demand of CASE products, Asia-Pacific has experienced the strongest growth. Production is increasing in Asia-Pacific most rapidly, due in part to the continued shift of production to countries such as china and India where manufacturing cost are significantly lower.

CASE are characterized by vastly differentiated products with a high degree of value addition. While capital investment requirements are relatively low, investment in R&D to develop new products and applications is high. They have typically smaller production units with more flexibility. Coatings will remain the dominant segment, with water-based, powder and radiation-curable types leading gains. The development of solvent free products is one of the most significant advances in the coating industry. Water based coatings are now used worldwide in many diverse applications. Acrylic emulsions have now become the premium binders for high-performance water based coatings because of their unique blend of properties: Quality, Versatility, Easy to formulate, Environmentally friendly. Adhesives is the second-largest industry for water-based technology in dollar value, trailing only the coatings industry ($7.5 billion sales). Performance and application improvements have made the technology more viable in some demanding end uses. New products that offer better properties, or help in cost reduction, continue to gain.
